Nose Surgery or Rhinoplasty
Even a small surgical adjustment made to your nose can result in a big improvement in overall facial harmony. Nose surgery or rhinoplasty involves more than merely making noses smaller. As your most prominent facial feature, a nose that is out of proportion or unbalanced with other features can negatively impact your self-image. Dr. Mark Jewell and Dr. Alireza “Reza” Najafian perform rhinoplasty in Eugene, Oregon, to help the nose look naturally attractive and complement the other facial features. They view this procedure as a balancing of size, width, and angles.
What can rhinoplasty surgery accomplish for me?
A rhinoplasty is a highly individualized procedure. The changes made to the nose during a rhinoplasty surgery can include the reduction or elimination of bumps or irregularities on the nose’s bridge. The bridge of the nose can be heightened or lowered if necessary with grafts. Even a wide bridge can be narrowed. The tip of the nose can be reduced or enlarged as well as turned up or down; even changing the size and position of the nostrils can be achieved with a rhinoplasty. The earliest recommended age for rhinoplasty is in the mid-teenage years when the nose is fully developed.
What kinds of rhinoplasty surgeries do you offer?
Dr. Jewell and Dr. Najafian perform both open and closed rhinoplasty depending on the best approach for you. An open rhinoplasty requires a small incision on the column that separates the nostrils but allows your surgeon greater access to correct the problems of your nose and underlying structures.
Will insurance pay for the procedure?
Rhinoplasty surgery is for cosmetic and health-related issues to correct structural abnormalities like a previously broken nose or a deviated septum which can lead to breathing problems, chronic stuffiness, snoring, and post nasal drip. Insurance may pay for a correction of a documented deviated septum (septoplasty) but generally not a rhinoplasty.

Exceptional Plastic Surgeons in Oregon
Dr. Jewell and Dr. Najafian combine artistry and surgical expertise to create customized results tailored to each patient's unique needs.
What should I expect?
Dr. Jewell and Dr. Najafian typically perform this procedure using general anesthesia at an outpatient ambulatory surgical center. When it comes to stitches, dissolving sutures are used internally, and dissolving or removable sutures close the wound at any external incisions. You will wake up with a splint covering your nose and nasal packing will be inside your nostrils to support the nose internally. These may be uncomfortable but you must not remove them without your surgeon’s permission. You will come to the office the next day to get the packing out, but you will wear the splint 24/7 for the first week.
A Reputation Built on Results
When will I see my final results?
The results of your rhinoplasty are immediately visible in the operating room, but they will be quickly hidden by splints and bandages and obscured by swelling. You will be sporting your new look within two to four weeks, but your nose shape will continue to refine itself over the next year.
What will recovery from a rhinoplasty look like?
Following surgery, you will need to have your caregiver drive you home and stay with you, here in the Eugene area, until you have had your first post-op appointment with our office. During the first 24 hours, expect to be swollen, bruised in the eye and cheek region, and stuffed up. You will have a drip pad placed at the end of your nose which will need to be changed. Remember no nose blowing is allowed. A soft diet may be best tolerated. Your prescription for pain pills, as well as cool compresses applied often during the first 48 hours, will help keep you comfortable. You may have a mild headache and will want to sleep with your head elevated on a couple of pillows. You will be breathing through your mouth so drinking extra fluids and sucking on candies can help. Plus use a lip balm on your lips. If you wear eyeglasses, be ready to keep them in their case for a couple of days. Contact lenses can be used as tolerated. While patient experiences vary, you will probably be back to your basic/normal routine within a week and back to regular exercise within three to six weeks. Before resuming any contact sports or an activity that can cause injury to your nose, please talk to your plastic surgeon.
