Male Breast Reduction
Gynecomastia is a condition of over-developed or enlarged breasts, which may occur in men of any age. It may be the result of hormonal changes, heredity, disease or the use of certain drugs. Gynecomastia can be more than a physical problem; it can cause emotional discomfort and impair an adolescent or adult male’s self-esteem. If you have gynecomastia, breast reduction surgery in Eugene, Oregon, with either Dr. Mark Jewell or Dr. Alireza “Reza” Najafian may be right for you. Surgery involves reducing excess fat, glandular tissue, and skin to flatten and enhance the chest contours.
Who are good candidates for male breast reduction?
Men from Salem, Corvallis, and Bend, who are at a relatively normal weight and whose breast development has stabilized are typically good candidates for gynecomastia surgery. Healthy individuals, who do not have life-threatening illnesses or medical conditions that can impair healing can do well after breast reduction surgery. A person considering this procedure needs to be a non-smoker and non-drug user.
Are there different techniques to correct gynecomastia?
At times, Dr. Jewell and Dr. Najafian are able to use VASER® liposuction www.vaser.com alone to take care of gynecomastia. The composition of the excess breast tissue, the amount of fat, glandular tissue, and skin may require that your surgeon needs to use surgical incisions to contour the male breast. He will share his thoughts on which technique he will use after examining you.
Our Exceptional Providers
Dr. Jewell and Dr. Najafian combine artistry and surgical expertise to create customized results tailored to each patient's unique needs.
Where is male breast reduction surgery done?
Surgery to correct gynecomastia is done as an outpatient procedure at our private ambulatory surgical facility typically under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation.
What can I expect after male breast reduction surgery?
A compression dressing will be applied after surgery to minimize swelling and support the new chest contour as it heals. A drainage tube may be placed under the skin to wick away excess blood that may collect: the drain is temporary but speeds the healing process. You will need to have a family member or friend care for you for the first 24 hours after surgery. Initially, you will have some discomfort which is controlled with medication. You will have limitations to your activity level which you will want to discuss at the consultation. Healing will continue for several weeks as swelling resolves. Scars created by any incisions made will continue to fade, but they are permanent.
