Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia is a condition of over-developed or enlarged breasts, which is may occur in men of any age. It may be the result of hormonal changes, heredity, disease or the use of certain drugs. Gynecomastia can be more than a physical problem. It can cause emotional discomfort and impair an adolescent or adult male’s self esteem. If you have gynecomastia, a breast reduction surgery may be right for you. Surgery involves reducing excess fat, glandular tissue, and skin to flatten and enhance the chest contours.

Who are good candidates for this?

Healthy individuals, who do not have life-threatening illnesses or medical conditions that can impair healing can do well after breast reduction surgery. Where is this procedure done?

Surgery to correct gynecomastia is done as an out-patient procedure in an ambulatory surgical facility typically under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation.

What can I expect after male breast reduction surgery?

A compression dressing will be applied after surgery to minimize swelling and support the new chest contour as it heals. A drainage tube may be placed under the skin to wick away excess blood that may collect: the drain is temporary but speeds the healing process. You will need to have a family member or friend care for you the first 24 hours after surgery. Initially you will have some discomfort which is controlled with medication. You will have limitations to your activity level which you will want to discuss at the consultation. Healing will continue for several weeks as swelling resolves. Scars created by any incisions made will continue to fade, but they are permanent.
