Facelift surgery was performed originally for many years with the goal of reversing the signs of aging by tightening loose skin. Gone are the expressionless, “wind tunnel” looks of the past. Modern techniques provide natural-looking, long-lasting results because the current approach to facial rejuvenation involves repositioning facial structures that have sagged downward, elevating the jowls to improve the jawline contour, and eyelid or brow surgery when needed. When Dr. Mark Jewell and Dr. Alireza “Reza” Najafian perform facelift surgery in Eugene, Oregon, they often also use non-surgical adjuncts such as fillers, neurotoxins, and medical skin care to give their facial rejuvenation results the added “wow” factor.

Are You a Candidate for Facelift Surgery?
Good candidates for facelift surgery, who visit from Salem, Corvallis, Bend, and throughout the Pacific Northwest, want to remedy many of the most common signs of facial aging, with realistic expectations about their results. On its own, a facelift elevates and tightens the lower two-thirds of the face, reducing jowls, lines around the nose and mouth, sagging cheeks, and an undefined jawline.
If your degree of sagging skin is minor, or if you wish to avoid a surgical recovery, you may be a better candidate for a non-surgical treatment, such as Ultherapy®.
Our Plastic Surgeons’ Facelift Approach
Formerly, the facelift involved merely tightening skin without any tightening of the deeper layers of the face. This resulted in the face being supported by the tightened skin only. As skin can continue to stretch, the results did not last too long.
In the early 1970s, a newer facelift operation was developed where the deeper layers of the face, technically called SMAS-platysma, were tightened in addition to the skin. Dr. Jewell and Dr. Najafian use an even newer technique that was developed by Belgian colleagues known as the MACS lift (minimal access cranial suspension facelift). This innovative approach to facial rejuvenation uses loops of sutures to re-suspend facial structures that have sagged downward with aging. It does not require deep-layer dissection like the SMAS lift and has excellent long-term outcomes.
Dr. Jewell is very experienced in this technique and has written textbook chapters on this approach. He also conducts courses to train other surgeons on how to do the MACS lift. His innovative spirit and pioneering approach earned him the Leadership Award from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (now known as The Aesthetic Society), an award that has only been given to 5 people in the organization’s 50-year history. Where Are the Incisions for a Facelift?
Dr. Jewell and Dr. Najafian begin each facelift with a carefully placed incision that starts just above each ear and continues down along the inside margin of the ear, which makes it well hidden. For some patients, the incision stops here. This is called a limited or “short scar” facelift.
For others, it continues around the ear lobe, behind the ear, and into the hairline. The incision in the front of the ear is planned to follow the contour of the ear so that it will be relatively discreet.
In some patients with laxity and banding of the neck, a very small incision, concealed beneath the chin, allows the vertical bands to be surgically manipulated for a smoothing effect and correction of fat pockets. Advancements in closing incisions have further improved the results.
How Long Is Facelift Recovery?
Bandages are usually removed on the day following your surgery. Some patients are able to return to work after 1 week, but we suggest giving yourself 2 weeks off from work and away from the “public eye.”
Swelling and bruising typically resolve within 2 weeks. Patients report sensations of tightness and tingling for up to 1 month after surgery. The full effect of your facelift takes about 3 to 6 months to emerge.
A Reputation Built on Results
How Long Does a Lower Facelift Last?
A facelift helps to reverse the effects of time and gravity. After this procedure, you will appear younger than if you had not had the procedure. Once you recover, keep in mind that aging continues. In this sense, the facelift “lasts” about 7 to 10 years.
Common Questions About Facelift
What is the best age to get a facelift?
The biological aging process is largely influenced by genetic heritage as well as lifestyle factors, so different people are ready for facelift surgery at different times. If you notice a discrepancy between how you look on the outside and how you feel inside, a facelift may be appropriate for you.
Can older patients have facelift surgery?
Patients older than 70 can certainly have facelift surgery. Often, the results are quite dramatic when a patient has a large amount of lax skin to be tightened. That said, it’s important to receive clearance from your primary care doctor before undergoing a facelift. Patients of any age need to be in good health without heart or blood pressure problems.
Can I undergo additional procedures at the same time as my facelift?
Absolutely. Dr. Jewell and Dr. Najafian often perform an eyelid lift, or blepharoplasty, at the same time as your facelift to reduce looseness in the eyelid skin and reduce the appearance of fat deposits and bags under the eyes.
After your surgery, you may also decide to maintain your rejuvenated look through medical skin care and injectable treatments. These can better define the lips, improve crow’s feet, and smooth lines between the eyes.
Light-based treatments can improve skin that’s been damaged by sun exposure. The combination of facial rejuvenation surgery and cosmetic medicine can produce the “wow” factor that facial rejuvenation patients are looking for.
