Liposuction for Men

Liposuction is a serious advance in the realm of surgical body contouring. There has not been a recent development in cosmetic surgery in the past several years that has sparked this kind of interest. This procedure allows alterations in body shape by taking away and reshaping deposits of fat. This is not a process for generalized obesity, but a technique for body contouring and shape improvement in specific patients who are close to their normal weight, have problematic localized fat deposits and healthy skin tone.

What is Vaser® Lipoplasty?

Liposuction is the surgical removal of localized fatty deposits found in various parts of the body. Tiny incisions are made in the skin and a small metal tube (cannula) is moved back and forth to suction out or remove the excess fat. Dr. Jewell uses the VASER® www.vaser.com an ultrasonically-powered liposuction device that offers improved, safer outcomes over conventional liposuction techniques. Fat is fragmented with VASER®’s ultrasonic- power probe, then it is easily suctioned out leaving less contour irregularities and bruising than conventional liposuction. VASER® liposuction is frequently combined with excisional body contouring procedures such as abdominoplasty by Dr. Jewell (lipoabdominoplasty). Dr. Jewell was the co-developer of the VASER® ultrasonic liposuction system and has published peer-reviewed scientific papers and written book chapters on liposuction and body contouring.

Is liposuction a good operation for men?

Fatty deposits are found in both men and women. Male patients find that liposuction is a way to achieve improvement in areas of the neck, chest, abdomen, and the “love handle” areas. It is an effective way to improve these areas with minimal interference in an active individual’s life style. Dr. Jewell believes that the VASER® ultrasonic liposuction device enhances outcomes in male patients.

Is liposuction painful?

Liposuction is a surgical operation and requires the use of anesthesia. In some cases, a local anesthetic is sufficient. At other times, a general anesthetic is necessary. After surgery, patients are stiff and sore, but pain is unusual. Pain is controlled with prescription pain pills.

Why is liposuction necessary? Won’t diet or more exercise solve the problem?

In Oregon exercise, diet, and a healthy lifestyle are extremely important. Unfortunately, they will not correct certain areas of your body that may be influenced by heredity. The distribution of fat is genetically determined. Areas such as double chin, abdomen, love handles, hips, and thighs will remain regardless of your weight and level of fitness.

Who can benefit from liposuction?

Liposuction works best for those individuals who have a body mass index (BMI) less that 30 and who have localized fatty areas on their body that have not responded to diet or exercise. These out of proportion areas can be improved by liposuction. Good skin tone is necessary for the skin to shrink to fit the new contour after liposuction. Loose skin or skin with stretch marks will not re-tighten itself after liposuction. Other types of body contouring operations such as the abdominoplasty would be necessary in this case. Age is not a deterrent to liposuction as long as your health is good and your skin tone is good.

How do I tell if my skin has good tone?

The best way is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Jewell. It is important that you understand exactly what liposuction can do for you. Even if your skin tone is not taunt, liposuction still might be helpful.

Keep in mind that each patient is unique and your results may vary.

After liposuction, will the fat come back?

This is a frequently asked question during a consultation. By the time we reach adolescence, the total number and distribution of fat cells in our bodies is completed. When we gain weight, we do not increase the total number of fat cells, but make each individually larger. Fat cells are removed by liposuction, and they cannot regenerate. After liposuction when you gain or lose weight, these areas will not return to their pre-liposuction appearance. It is important that patients continue their lifetime focus on exercise, diet and a healthy lifestyle.

How long does it take to recover from liposuction?

Recovery after liposuction depends on the individual and the area of the body treated. Patients in most cases go home the same day as surgery. Elastic type compression garments are applied after the surgery and remain in place to decrease postoperative swelling. Depending on what areas are liposuction, we recommend that patients consider 2 to 5 days off from work. Bruising is generally gone by two weeks after surgery.

How involved is liposuction?

Once your consultation is completed, a plan for liposuction will be developed. This usually involves day surgery and general anesthesia. Smaller, more localized areas of the body may be treated under local anesthesia in Dr. Jewell’s accredited office surgery center. A preoperative consultation occurs before surgery to make certain that your questions have been answered prior to surgery.
