Be Proactive In the Fight Against WrinklesUpdated November 20, 2013
As the years pass, many people experience facial wrinkles that detract from their appearance and make them feel self-conscious. They may even begin to consider having a face lift. While a face lift may be a good option, there are a number of options available to reduce the look of wrinkles and provide a fresher and younger appearance. Dr. Jewell has extensive experience in dealing with facial wrinkles and can advise you of various types of treatments available.
Causes of Wrinkling
Damage from the sun’s ultraviolet rays is one of the chief causes of facial wrinkling and skin damage. As people age, the skin becomes thinner and less elastic, which contributes to wrinkles. Smoking and poor nutrition also contribute to premature wrinkling. Even natural movements of facial muscles can help to increase wrinkling. Recent research has also shown that genetic factors may have a significant effect in the occurrence of early wrinkling and aging of skin, which could prompt people to take action sooner than later. Volume loss within the midface area is also a cause of wrinkles as there is not enough soft tissue volume within the face to support the skin.
Natural Methods To Prevent Wrinkling
The best way to naturally prevent wrinkles is to cover up in the sun and use sunscreen liberally. If you are smoker, quit now to keep your skin looking smooth. Sleeping on your back is recommended to prevent facial muscles from sagging, which could inevitably lead to wrinkles. Use glasses for reading if needed, and wear sunglasses outdoors to prevent squinting. Eat a good diet, with plenty of fruits and vegetables and portions of fish, which contain oils and fatty acids that help to maintain skin quality. For daily maintenance of facial skin, use a good quality moisturizer daily and avoid over-washing your face with soap and other cleansers. Alpha-hydroxy acid and retinal creams can also be helpful in reducing the appearance of facial wrinkles.
Cosmetic Procedures for Wrinkles
If you’re still interested in using cosmetic procedures to eliminate wrinkles you have your choice of procedures. Try Botox injections to relax the muscles under the skin. Or laser resurfacing, which removes the top layer of skin and stimulates the body’s production of collagen to give the face a smoother and fresher appearance. Another method for reducing wrinkles is dermabrasion, which abrades off the top layer of skin to bring newer skin to the surface. The use of volumizing fillers, such as the recently–approved Allergan Voluma tissue filler is helpful in restoring facial volume. It can serve literally as a liquid face lift for some patients. Dr. Jewell can advise you on whether combining these facial treatments with a face lift is the best choice to improve your facial appearance.
