Knowing Your Risks

Updated March 30, 2012

Many cosmetic surgery patients are not aware that some supplements put them at risk for serious bleeding complications during and after surgery. A study in Aesthetic Surgery Journal focused on 19 herbs, three herbal formulas, and two herbal teas that can preoperatively and postoperatively cause intrinsic bleeding and potentially dangerous bleeding effects such as development of hematoma. Some of the most popular herbs and supplements with these effects include:

Garlic
Ginger
Ginkgo
Ginseng
Oil of wintergreen
Saw palmetto
Chinese peony

Many patients don’t remember to include vitamins and supplements as a medication when filling out pre-surgery forms. By disclosing supplement information Dr. Jewell would be able to discuss cessation and recommendations for managing your supplements.
