Body contouring surgery has been an integral part of Dr. Mark Jewell’s Eugene, Oregon, practice for many years. One of the more interesting procedures in this area is the lipoabdominoplasty which is the combination of an abdominoplasty (“tummy tuck”) and liposuction. This combination was developed by some of Dr. Jewell’s Brazilian colleagues in order to improve the aesthetics of the entire abdominal area and waist. Dr. Jewell was one of the first plastic surgeons in North America to introduce this procedure to improve the contour of the abdomen and restore a more youthful appearance.
What’s special about the lipoabdominoplasty is that it leaves tissue layers largely intact, but thinner. Blood supply to tissue is not interrupted, which is an important safety consideration for healing. This approach permits both deep layer tightening to improve abdominal contour that’s lost after pregnancy. Additional enhancement of waistline contour can be accomplished through tightening of the superficial fascia layer in the lower abdomen that’s known as Scarpa’s fascia. The combination of a dual-layer tightening and liposuction according to Dr. Jewell offers patients improved outcomes over traditional approaches that other plastic surgeons utilize.
Dr. Jewell has many years of experience in Liposuction combined surgery to manage tissue looseness in the abdomen. Moreover, he innovated much of the ultrasonic surgical technology that permits these types of procedures to be performed. He was one of the developers of the VASER ultrasonic liposuction device and the Ethicon Endosurgery Harmonic Scalpel Synergy hand piece. He believes that improved outcomes are the result of technology and surgical techniques.
Within Dr. Jewell’s practice, he offers all types of body contouring surgery, from VASER liposuction, to lipoabdominoplasty, and to body contouring after massive weight loss. The lipoabdominoplasty is a very versatile procedure that is customized for each patient. In some situations, it can be performed in Dr. Jewell’s accredited surgery center under tumescent anesthesia (“limited or mini lipoabdominoplasty”) or at our local McKenzie Surgery Center. Additionally, the lipoabdominoplasty can be combined with other procedures such as breast augmentation or breast lift to make a “mommy makeover”.
