Dr. Mark Jewell was invited by the Jordana Carioca, the plastic surgery society of Rio Di Janerio, Brazil to speak at their annual cosmetic surgery meeting that was held in Buzios, Brazil. Plastic surgery is very popular in Brazil and the larger cities such as Rio and Sao Paulo have their individual plastic surgery societies. This meeting was in conjunction with the 8th annual American-Brazilian Aesthetic Meeting.
Dr. Jewell presented two lectures on reoperative breast implant surgery and the management of chin fat with Kybella and Ulthera, two non-surgical treatments. Brazil like the US has millions of women with breast implants that ultimately will require “maintenance”. Since 2001, Dr. Jewell estimates that there are in excess of 3.5 million women with breast implants in Brazil and more than 5.2 million women in the United States.
The second lecture covered the options of management of chin area fat by surgery, liposuction, Ulthera and the new injectable drug, Kybella. According to Dr. Jewell, this can be individualized for patients with great options available.
Dr. Jewell enjoyed this opportunity to interact with Brazilian and international plastic surgery colleagues at this large meeting. One of the benefits that he enjoys is to learn from other surgeons and to incorporate their techniques into what he offers patients in his practice.
