How to Revitalize Skin

Facelift HistoryEach of us cares about the health of our skin, but are we making healthy choices in how we care for our skin?  Limiting sun exposure, monitoring a healthy diet and participating in a healthy skin care regimen are very important measures we can control to affect how our skin behaves.  Sun exposure is our primary concern as UV exposure is the main culprit of damaged skin.  Acne causing bacteria deep in the skin’s pores is the most common skin disorder which causes breakouts and can leave scars.  Weight-loss-dieting also influences the health of our skin as one often does not get essential vitamins and minerals.  The good news is that you can monitor your diet and ensure you are not deficient in vitamins and minerals, take preventative measures, and learn more about in-office treatments to revitalize your skin.

Revitalize Skin affected by Dieting

BreastRecon_HorizontalDieting may be robbing you of essential vitamins and minerals.  Vitamin A, B, C, D, and E deficiencies can leave your skin dry and dull which can lead to acne, eczema and redness.  Consider the fact that vitamins C and E are antioxidants and have the ability to fight off free radicals when taken internally or applied topically to help support healthy skin. Revitalize your skin when you are dieting by hydrating the skin with no less than eight cups of water per day. If your dietary needs are not sufficient, dietary supplements tied to anti-aging may be needed to help the body produce collagen and protect cell membranes.

Preventative Skin Care Regimens that Work

liposuction alternativesWearing sunscreen every day, rain or shine, is our number one priority to prevent cumulative sun damage.  The more the skin is exposed to UV rays over the years, the more our DNA becomes damaged and your skin looks rough, dull and weathered.  Dr. Jewell recommends wearing sunscreen that has a SPF 30 or greater.

aprilPrevent acne breakouts by adhering to cosmecutically (scientifically-based) skin care regimen.  At the Jewell District Medical Spa, we offer the Hydra Facial, a professionally-applied type of skin care that removes excess sebum from the pores and hydrates the skin. Even if you don’t have acne, Dr. Jewell suggests alphahydroxy acids(AHAs) with the ultrasonic brush by Clarisonic as excellent cleansers to enhance this skin care regimen.

Retin-A is a derivative of vitamin A that works to thicken collagen, exfoliate cells regularly, and lighten freckles and age spots.  Hyroquinone also works to diminish pigmentary changes on the skin.  Chemical peels are an alternative way to exfoliate dead skin cells and stimulate new skin.

Rejuvenation Treatments for Sun-damage

Clear + Brilliant Skin

Dr. Jewell offers in-office skin rejuvenation with lasers that ablate the upper layer of skin when a topical cream therapy is not enough.  We offer Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) which reduces the red and brown pigment found in sun-damages skin.  Laser Genesis and the Clear & Brilliant fractionated lasers remove the outer layer of skin to reveal healthy new skin below as it heals.  These lasers, unlike some CO2 lasers, have very little down time.

Fillers and injectables work on lines and wrinkles which are a result of the breakdown of collagen and elastin suffered from sun-damage.  Botox Cosmetic and Dysport work exceptionally well to reduce forehead and crow’s feet wrinkling due to muscular action of frowning.  Sun damage and gravity can cause the facial cheeks to become flat and lose their definition. Juvederm Voluma XC is a “volumizer” that plumps from the inside out to redefine a more youthful appearance.

Surgical Options

Facelifts before and afterWhile non-surgical options such as medical skin care, cosmetic injectables, and light-based treatments can improve the quality and texture of sun-damages skin, Dr. Jewell offers surgical procedures such as the MACS facelift and blepharoplasty surgery that tightens looseness within the face and eyelids. The combination of medical skin care and surgery often produces the “wow” factor of facial rejuvenation for patients.
