Non-Invasive Body Contouring – Does It Work? Is It Safe?Updated September 21, 2012
There are several options available for non-invasive body contouring today. These include devices that “freeze” fat or use high-intensity focused ultrasound to remove fat from deeper layers and tighten collagen in the tissue. Dr. Mark Jewell was one of the developers and lead researcher for the Liposonix® device that is FDA-approved. This device, according to Dr. Jewell offers selected patients the ability to reduce their waist circumference an inch or more with a one hour treatment in his clinic.
According to Dr. Jewell, the thermal effect from the high-intensity focused ultrasound energy in the tissues permanently destroys fat and tightens the collagen in the deeper layer to produce an internal shrink wrap effect that improves contour. Dr. Jewell’s latest scientific article that was published in the September 2012 issue of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, reviewed the safety profile and the patient experience for this type of treatment. The data showed that there were not any systemic effects of this treatment on blood chemistry and that patients were comfortable during the procedure. Some patients may experience minor discomfort during the procedure, but it does not last. Bruising can occur from the tissue effect of the ultrasonic energy, but is temporary.
The ideal candidate for the Liposonix procedure has a body mass index (BMI) less than 30, good skin tone, and localized fat deposits of the abdomen or waist of a depth that permits treatment. Patients seeking body contouring should realize that this is not a form of weight management, but a technology to improve localized body contour. Other types of body contouring offered by Dr. Jewell include VASER® ultrasonic liposuction and the lipoabdominoplasty that combines liposuction and tummy tuck-type surgery.
There are many options for body contouring. It is important that patients understand their options and where they fit into various categories of technology. Dr. Mark Jewell offers all types of body contouring procedures in his Eugene, Oregon clinic.
