Non-Invasive
Patients today seek facial rejuvenation through a variety of approaches that encompass both surgery and non-surgical treatments.
Patients of all ages and skin types now have the ability to access the entire range of skin care and rejuvenation procedures that promote
healthy skin and a youthful appearance. Dr. Jewell has the unique ability to offer patients the ability to improve the quality of their
skin through a variety of techniques that have been shown to have scientific benefit. His training and innovation in areas of facial
rejuvenation make these procedures a good choice to enhance your appearance. Your role in caring for your skin is very important, as factors
such as smoking and exposure to all forms of ultraviolet rays will contribute to accelerated skin aging and increased risk of skin cancer.
First, Dr. Jewell advises that all patients limit exposure to sun and artificial ultraviolet light (tanning beds) in order to prevent
ongoing photo damage to their skin. The use of skin protection with sunscreens that block UV-A and UV-B rays is a good starting point.
Protective clothing and hats help provide additional protection. It is also a good idea to keep children out of the sun as early sun burns
can cause skin cancer years later.
Everyone wants a clear complexion that does not show photo damage or aging. Medical skin care is a good starting point for patients to
address skin that has been damaged by sunlight, to reduce pore size, or correct excess oiliness, but is also good for the few who have
flawless skin but want to keep it that way. Each patient’s skin care needs is considered when a medical skin care program is developed by
Dr. Jewell and his skin care specialist nursing and esthetician staff. Dr. Jewell offers OBAGI™, NIA™, Jane Iredale™ and NeoStrata™ skin care products in addition to
medically prescribed drugs. Your individualized medical skin care regimen will prepare your skin for additional procedures such as skin
peels or light-based treatments.
Some patients find that areas of sun damage can be additionally improved by a skin peel with trichloracetic acid (TCA). Dr. Jewell uses the
OBAGI Blue Peel™ that allows for treatment of sun-damaged skin and superficial wrinkles. This approach is more effective than more superficial
treatments such as microdermabrasion, but has a day or two of down time before resuming normal activities.
In addition to medical skin care, skin treatments, and surgery, Dr. Jewell offers BOTOX® and tissue filler treatments. BOTOX® treatments can help
improve frown lines of the forehead, elevate the inner portion of your eyebrows, treat crow’s feet wrinkles, and reduce the appearance of neck
bands (off-label use). BOTOX® can be used in other areas to control excessive sweating in the armpit and hands (off-label use). Dr. Jewell is
involved in clinical research studies for the next type of neurotoxin, Reloxin® that is currently in clinical trials.
While there are many different types of semi-permanent and permanent fillers that are approved by the US FDA, Dr. Jewell believes that the semi-permanent
fillers based on stabilized hyaluronic acid, a naturally-occurring substance within our bodies offer the best option for excellent outcomes and safety.
Dr. Jewell has extensive experience with this group of fillers to fill wrinkles, enhance lip lines, and restore facial volume. He has published scientific
articles on fillers, and teaches advanced filler techniques to other physicians. Dr. Jewell uses RESTYLANE®, PERLANE®, and Juve’derm® fillers.
It is his sense of proportion, talents of artistry and experience that uniquely qualify him. Our patients find that the use of BOTOX® and tissue
fillers offer improvement in facial wrinkles caused by muscular action and for filling wrinkles and correction of facial volume loss. These
treatments help maintain a refreshed, relaxed appearance of the forehead and fullness in the lip and cheek regions.
Comprehensive facial rejuvenation also involves the use of light-based treatments offered by Dr. Jewell and his skin care specialist
nursing and esthetician staff. Depending on a patient’s individual needs, treatment can be developed with intense pulsed light (IPL), the 1064nm YAG laser,
or carbon dioxide laser. These treatments are used for treatment of brown or red skin pigment excess (dyscromias, skin capillaries, and
rosaeca), deeper wrinkles and hair reduction. Dr. Jewell has extensive experience with lasers, since 1984.
Intense pulsed light (IPL) treatments can help reduce the amount of red or brown skin pigments found in skin. The light frequencies
used in serial IPL treatments can improve skin color problems that cannot be corrected otherwise. There is minimal down time with
Limelight™ IPL treatments.
ProWave™ 770 IPL treatments can also be used to reduce the presence of body hair. This involves several sessions to treat areas of body
hair as not all hair follicles are in the same growth phase. IPL treatments to reduce the amount of body hair help patients reduce their
dependence on shaving or waxing procedures.
The 1064nm YAG laser that Dr. Jewell has is an effective treatment for small facial capillaries, called telangiectasias and the reduction of
facial pore size and is thought to increase collagen.
Finally, Dr. Jewell offers carbon dioxide laser resurfacing procedures for deeper wrinkles of the face. This procedure is quite effective,
yet has the most downtime of all light-based skin treatments. Dr. Jewell cautions patients that after carbon dioxide laser resurfacing that
there will be subsequent skin redness that takes time to go away. Alternatively, the IPL and 1064nm YAG laser have minimal downtime when used
to treat skin discoloration, minor wrinkles, pose size, hair excess, or excess capillaries in skin.
Light-based skin care treatments offer a nice compliment to other forms of non-surgical skin care and surgical facial rejuvenation offered
by Dr. Jewell. With over 23 years of experience with lasers, Dr. Jewell can develop a treatment program for you to improve a variety of skin
conditions with the newest forms of laser and IPL that have minimal down time.
